Message: Thought I would weigh in on the Northern Hawk Owl discussion. Indeed there has been recent nesting in Glacier National Park, and as I understand it, there were four or five pairs nesting at least last summer in Glacier, but I don't know about this year. These were reported in North American Birds. There also are nesting records for northern Idaho. Three summers ago there was an active nest in the Selkirk Mountains just east of Priest Lake that had a sad ending. The young birds that had just left the nest were actually photagraphed by a friend of mine from Sandpoint. Shortly thereafter Georgene and I went back with him to the nesting area. The only thing we found were empty shotgun shell casings below where the birds had been photographed. My friend thinks he knows who the culprits are, but nothing was ever proven. This same friend has also seen Hawk Owls in mid summer near Hidden Lake north of Priest Lake near the canadian border, so there are definite records of
nesting in the states. In September 2 years ago we saw a Northern Hawk Owl on Salmo mountain just over the Idaho border in Washington, also in the Selkirk Mountains. Now with 2 recent fall and winter sightings in S. Idaho, when are we going to find one in Utah.
