I had the same thought as Kris - though there is a Western Screech-Owl
call that is quite similar to Northern Hawk-Owl. Although Saw-whet Owl
would be quite common, I don't find their call that similar to the
Hawk-Owl. The "double trill" of the Western Screech-Owl is rather
close, maybe even more similar than Boreal. As much as I'd like it to
be a Boreal - I've seen all the North American Owls except Northern
Hawk-Owl and Boreal . . .
The hills above Garden City may not seem to be typical habitat for
Western Screech-Owl, but I have seen them on Deseret Ranch, not too far
away, in similar habitat.
