The bird boom is on! In the last two weeks we have had new arrivals
including a violet-green swallow to balance the barn swallows, a
green-tailed towhee to compliment the spotted towhees, brown-headed cowbirds
(2 males and a female), common grackles (a pair showed up yesterday), and
peafowl (peacocks, four one day and a white one another day.escapees). Also
present are about 30 mourning doves, now-resident Eurasian collared doves,
sandhill cranes and kestrels and red-tailed hawk and unidentified gull
flyovers, black-headed grosbeak, american goldfinch, lark sparrow, bullocks
orioles, red-winged blackbirds, black-chinned hummers, house finches,
robins, and a handful of really colorful house sparrows. There are northern
mockingbirds above and below our place, and the sage thrashers have located
again up-canyon a couple of miles. The on again-off again pond below our
yard has recently hosted cinnamon teal, gadwalls and mallards, killdeer,
least sandpipers, spotted sandpiper, avocets, common merganser and wilson's
phalaropes.
The Green River is high, globemallow, evening primrose and paintbrush are
blooming.
