This evening Reinhard Jockel and I birded Steel Canyon which is a little north and west of Clarkston, UT. He is leading a Bridgerland Audubon field trip to Steel Canyon tomorrow morning. In the fields north of the turnoff into Steel Canyon we found several Grasshopper Sparrows. As soon as we entered the canyon we were greeted by a Mountain Bluebird (always a good omen on a birding trip). We heard a Warbling Vireo at the entrance. About a quarter mile into the canyon we saw a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Dusky Flycatcher, a nesting House Wren, Western Tanager, Plumbeous Vireo, lots of Chipping Sparrows, Lark Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, and a Red-naped Sapsucker. As we were leaving the canyon this evening we had great looks at a Short-eared Owl. There were lots of Western Kingbirds on the telephone pole wires on the north end of the valley. We also saw several Bullock's Orioles. I expect we will have a great field trip tomorrow morning when the birds are a lot more active and singing.
Thanks.
Buck Russell
