[Birdtalk] Lewis' Woodpeckers, Common Loons

Thanks to Joel and Kathy for reporting the Lewis's Woodpeckers in
Porterville, Morgan County. Today I fabricated a semi-legitimate errand I
needed to run in Morgan and then how could I not continue to Porterville to
enjoy those woodpeckers? Not possible, thinks me.

Both birds were in the trees Joel described and I also saw one flycatching
over the road and landing on the other side. Watch the mile markers as you
leave Morgan heading south on SR-66. You'll see mile marker 12 shortly after
leaving town. When you reach mile marker 8, slow down and pull off the road
on the right about a tenth of a mile later at a gray barn with a white bus
parked on the opposite side of your approach. Both are next door to the home
Joel mentioned at 3625 So. The woodpeckers were in the trees behind the
barn.

Also in those trees was a trio of American Kestrels--two females and a
male--apparently setting up housekeeping. The females did not seem to be in
competition and the male mated with at least one of them. I also heard a Fox
Sparrow singing in the brush south of the trees and Sandhill Cranes in
nearby fields.
