This morning my wife and I birded the Amalga Barrens and Benson Marina areas. We found some new birds for the year. In the Amalga Barrens we found an out of place Mountain Bluebird. Other birds in the barrens were Vesper Sparrows and Savannah Sparrows. The Yellow-headed Blackbirds have returned to the barrens. At the Benson Marina we found a Swainson’s Hawk sitting on the Osprey platform on the north side of the marina. I got excited when I saw some birds flying in and out of the mud swallow nests under the marina bridge, but it was House Sparrows working on building a nest in a mud swallow nest. It looked odd to see a House Sparrow hanging upside down, clinging to the bottom of a mud swallow nest. In a field on the west side of the marina there were a couple of Snow Geese mixed in a flock of Canada Geese. There were the usual Clark’s Grebes swimming around the marina.
Thanks.
