Birders,
I spent last Friday in Daggett County and found a few
interesting birds. Probably the most interesting was
the five Gray-crowned Rosy Finches at the Lucerne
Valley Marina on the shore of Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
They were coming in to a feeder located next to a
residence that was located just to the north of the
boat launch at the end of the road. Two Gt. Horned
Owls were also in a tree near one of the houses at the
marina. Just east of the town of Manila there were
more than 100 Sandhill Cranes feeding in the fields.
First saw them near the Henry's Fork Wetlands just
over the Utah border in Wyoming, but they were quite
accomodating and flew over the border into Utah while
I was watching them. Also had a Hooded Merganser in
an area just south of the Utah border in an ice free
area of Flaming Gorge. Most of the reservoir was
still frozen solid last Friday. Saw five Eurasian
Collared Doves in Manila and one in Dutch John.
Dippers were singing on Sheep Creek, and many Cassin's
Finches and Pine Siskins plus a White-breasted
Nuthatch and a Hairy Woodpecker were coming in to a
feeder at the Red Canyon Lodge. Still a lot of snow
up high and the high lakes were still frozen.
