Linda,
I for one like to remember, and still do stumble on ID. Many events in birding are wonderful, when it wasn't and isn't ID that is important. Sometimes that information can, and even does on occasion, get in the way. The JOY of birding, can take on all different experiences. So enjoy your "blue jays" and for what they were doing then. Your ID of the Western Scrub Jay is more than likely accurate. By the way, they LOVE raw peanuts in the shell. They hide them in my yard all year. I have neighbors that ask me about the peanuts they are finding in their yards too. The jays, crows, magpies etc. remember up to 80-90% of where they store them too. I LOVE IT, and all aspects of it.

"Oh the Joy of Birding"

When writing about the "tame" blue jays in my yard, I was using "blue
jay" to differentiate from Stellar's Jay. According to my Ken Kaufman
bird guide, these are likely "Western Scrub Jays." I was too focused on
enjoying their behavior to give a proper I-D.
  Just another excited amateur,
  Linda
