We have initiated a study on shorebird population size, survival and movements here at Great Salt Lake. Our lab (in conjunction with the Pan American Shorebird Program) has been color-banding American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, Snowy Plover, Long-billed Curlew and Killdeer at several locations around GSL. If anyone happens to see a banded shorebird please note the color combinations, location, date/time and contact me.

Band combinations should be read from belly to toe as left leg X over Y (L:X/Y) and right leg X over Y (R:X/Y). American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts and Long-billed Curlew are banded with 3 bands per leg on the tibiotarsus. SNPL with only 2 bands per leg on the tarsometatarsus. Use the anatomical directions (observer faces the same direction as the bird) to designate right and left. Colors frequently used (the Xs and Ys) are: aqua (A, light blue), dark blue (B), dark green (G), lime (L, light green), red (R), yellow (Y), white (W), orange (O), violet (V), pink (P), brown (N), and black (K). Standard metallic bands should be coded as silver (S).

Juveniles have been banded with only 1 band per leg.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Cheers
