The Utah County Birders substituted a fieldtrip to the
south part of the county for our monthly meeting
Wednesday night. Twenty-seven people participated and
saw a combined list of about 50 species from six PM
until dark. We started in the town of Goshen, drove
north for a couple of miles, headed back south through
Goshen Canyon and finished up with a gorgeous sunset
at Mona Reservoir in Juab County where Common
Nighthawks flew low enough to almost touch.
Highlights included Cattle Egrets, and Long-billed
Curlews feeding in a flooded field with many
White-faced Ibis nearby in another field. We were
also able to see three Short-eared Owls and winnowing
Wilson's Snipes. Some observers had quick looks at
two Sandhill Cranes while other fortunate ones had a
Bobolink flyby. The Blue Grosbeak and the
Yellow-breasted Chat that has been seen in Goshen
Canyon didn't avail themselves of an opportunity to be
seen. A complete list of birds will be in the next
newsletter. There will also be a fieldtrip in place
of the next monthly meeting in July--this one up
Payson Canyon. Stay tuned for details.
