We very much enjoyed birding the lower Uintas this morning where we
encountered 37 species. We started at Woodland, Utah and birded along two
short trails off of Route 35, which is the road to Wolf Creek Pass. Our
first trail entrance was 0.3 miles from the bridge that crosses the Provo
River where there is a large green mailbox on the right and a good dirt
road that goes about a mile to the national forest trailhead to Willow
Canyon. From there the trail goes through large aspen groves, sage flats
and lush meadows along a small stream and continues into dense conifer
forest. Our second trail was a mile or two further east on Route 35 where
there is a large parking lot on the left side of the road. A very short
walk over the hill from the parking lot takes you to a network of beaver
ponds and a beautiful trail along a stream in conifers.
