I'm not Cliff but I do know something about this. The Timberline Sparrow was
first recognized as a species in 1925. Since the American Ornithologists'
Union published the first checklist of North American Birds in 1957 it has
been recognized as subspecies of the Brewer's Sparrow. Here is the catch it
is larger, darker, proportionally smaller bill, and has a different song
from the Brewer's. It also uses different habitats than the Brewer's. As
most of you probably know the Brewer's Sparrow is primarily found in the
sagebrush throughout the western US and southern Canada. Timberline as the
name suggests is found at or above tree line and uses dwarf willows and
birches. Timberlines can be found from Glacier National Park north to Alaska
and the Yukon. Although there are reports of dark Brewer's in alpine willows
in Colorado so they may be in Idaho and Wyoming as well. Since at least 1998
there has been a proposal before the AOU taxonomic committee to elevate the
timberline to a full species. Besides the previously mentioned traits the is
also statistically significant genetic drift and the two forms appear to be
reproductively isolated (they don't interbreed) even where they may overlap.

Before you go redoing your life list keep in mind these types of proposals
usually take many years to fully address. Many of you area aware of a
similar proposal to split out the South Hills Crossbill.

Maybe everyone else already knows about this, but could you post about
Timberline Sparrows? I didn't know there was a move afoot to split out
a separate species from the Brewer's, but I rarely keep up with
the "lumping and splitting". When I did a search, I found a piece from
Cornell mentioning the possibility of a split. Some more details would
be appreciated. Catchy name---Timberline!, kinda cool!
