Hi all,
I spent this past weekend in Maple Canyon, which is west of Fountain Green
(Sanpete Co). The canyon boasts the highest concentration of CORDILLEREAN
FLYCATCHERS that I can remember from anywhere in Utah. There were many
individuals singing around the day use and campground area. Presumably the
moss lined conglomerate rock provides ample nesting locations while the
dense deciduous 'forest' with scattered conifers lends itself well for this
species. There also seemed to be an unusually high number of HERMIT
THRUSHES in this area. Numerous CANYON WRENS sang in the canyons from the
walls above. Also, parent CHIPPING SPARROWS and MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS
were seen feeding young near the day use parking area. Other birds from
the canyon include Golden Eagle, Turkey Vulture, Dusky Flycatcher, VG
Swallow, WT Swift, both chickadees, RB Nuthatch, Stellar's Jay, Warbling and
Plumbeous Vireos, Western Tanager, etc.
