It was fun going out to Farmington Bay this morning, after being in Alaska where birds are pretty scarce right now. Although the Common, and Hoary Redpolls, plus Boreal Chickadees were numerous and enjoyable, I wouldn't always compare Alaska with the Bay, but I was excited to see the normals:
GBH's; Coots; Kestrals; Pied-billed Grebe; Pintail Ducks; Northern Harriers; and even got some fun pictures of a Ringed-necked Pheasant; Red-tailed Hawk Juv.; adult Bald Eagle plus a Juv. eating on a carcass of sorts. Even though I enjoyed them all, it took two birds to make my day. The Canvasback was number one, all though the Canvasback isn't that uncommon here right now, there was only one in the ponds, at the end of the long quite road. I did get some great pictures just shooting out of the car window, until he was scared away by a dog running free down the long quite road, with his owner driving a car behind him. I frowned at that, but waited patiently until they left. I then started back, but before I could turn the corner up that long quite road, I was surprised by a Barn Owl flying low, and just over the car. I quickly stopped and watched it soaring to the South. I jumped out, with camara in hand, and got some great pictures as it came soaring back over my head. Wow! No one can say birding is boring on long quite roads in little old Farmington!
