I followed Tim Avery's instructions today and found a mixed flock of about 30 rosy-finches, mostly Hepburn's race of the Gray-crowned, with some of the local boys (interior race with less gray on the head-- specifically, with brown "cheeks"), and even fewer Black rosy-finches. They were at the Ben Hames house on the Alta Bypass Road. The flock first arrived from the west, and then flew back & forth between the feeders southwest of the house and the conifers near the road (to the west of the house). I was there about 11:15 am and had to wait a few minutes, but then the birds were there for the remainder of the half hour or more I stuck around.
It was a nice study in the various types of rosy-finches found in this part of the world. Thank you, Tim, for the directions to the feeders. It was nice to breathe some fresh air today.
Happy birding,
David
