The Utah County birders will be sponsoring a field trip to look for the
Montezuma Canyon scaled quail on Friday January 19th and Saturday
January 20th. All interested are invited to participate, whether you're
a member of UCB or not.
You will need to make your own travel, lodging, and eating arrangements.
I encourage you to car pool if possible. Hopefully the birds will still
be around but this cannot be guaranteed. Dennis Shirley is of the
opinion that it is likely that we should still be able to find them in
the same place, the bird gods willing. Keep your fingers crossed between
now and then. Please feel free to bring any and all appropriate birding
talismans and charms.
Trip date: Friday 1/19 and Saturday 1/20, weather permitting.
Departure time: 4:00 p.m. Friday.
Departure place: Springville Walmart parking lot, north-east corner.
Return time: as per personal preference Saturday afternoon.
Itinerary:
Friday 4 p.m. - 10 p.m.: travel to Bluff. Individuals can plan on
stopping in Price or Moab for dinner if they're interested. There is
also fast food in Monticello and Blanding. Note that most things close
down early in this corner of the state during the off season. However,
the grocery stores in Moab and Blanding remain open until around 10
p.m., if memory serves me.
Friday night: Bluff. For places to eat and stay in Bluff: please visit
http://www.bluffutah.org/business.htm. I plan to stay in the Recapture
Lodge, which is where I always prefer to stay in Bluff. It's owner, Jim
Hook, is a birder and a very nice guy. The Desert Rose Inn is fairly new
and looks nice but I have never stayed there and can not speak for the
quality of the rooms. The food at the Twin Rocks Cafe is actually pretty
good and reasonably priced. They open for breakfast at 7:00 a.m. and
close at 8:00 p.m. during winter. Accommodations in Blanding are also
available and are described at http://www.blandingutah.org/.
Saturday: 8:00 a.m.: meet at the Twin Rocks trading post. You can't miss
it; when you enter town it's on the west (right) side of the road. Leave
Bluff and travel via Hatch trading post to the Montezuma canyon site
described by Dennis Shirley. Although the Montezuma Canyon road is a
graded gravel county road, winter maintenance should not be counted on.
You'll probably want a high clearance vehicle and, depending on
conditions, may need four-wheel drive. Dennis is of the opinion that the
quail will probably not be active much earlier than 8:30-9:00 a.m.
If the weather appears to be problematic this trip will be rescheduled.
Be nice to us, Colby. And please note the "Save the Swinging Bridge!"
project at http://www.twinrocks.com/pages/swingingbridge.html.
Hope to see you Friday afternoon,
Lu Giddings
