Milt, Leena, Grant, Dellamae and I went up to Lee Kay ponds today (1-3-07)
to take a look at the gulls. KC Childs had the Western Gull in his scope
when we got there (about noon). It was on the western pond near the
entrance. We got great looks at the bird. We also saw Many Herring and
Ring-billed Gulls, some California Gulls and one or two Thayer's. We
couldn’t find the 'Iceland' or Glaucous.

There were a couple Bald Eagles that kept sending all the gulls and geese up
into the air. Before we left we saw a Bald Eagle fly down onto the ice to
eat some food dropped by one of the gull. Then a little farther down the
road to the East, just as the gulls were settling again they all flew back
up into the air as another eagle dove down at a gull. The gull dropped back
onto the ice as the eagle swooped back into the air. Then as the gull tried
again to take flight the eagle pounced back down and pined the gull on the
ice. It was very fun to watch. Like the eagle thought it was an accipiter.
I don’t think it was the Western Gull that was killed. :^)
