I use eBird.org on a regular basis.
eBird.org got a big surge in new users after the Great
Backyard Bird Count in February 2006. Since that time, about
30 checklists are added per week in Utah.
Even if nobody else was using eBird, it is of great
value to me as an individual because it allows me to
do things like keep track of what birds, I have seen,
when and where they were, (and where/when I might expect
to find them in the future.)
eBird makes it easier to add new species to my bird
list. For example, if I want to see a short eared
owl, I aught to head for box elder county.... If
I gotta add a roadrunner to my list then Saint George
is the place to be.
As another example, eBird.org indicates that 30,000
tundra swans are expected at the bear river bird
refuge the first week of November.
My current mission with eBird.org is to document
the spread of the Great Tailed Grackle in Northern
Utah. eBird.org has allowed me to document that the
population of grackles in Willard/Brigham City is
approximately double what it was last winter.
(And eventually I may track the
spread of Eurasian Collared Doves.)
Regards,
Joseph
