I would agree with Stephen's observation. There seemed to be a greater
number of Ross's Geese mixed in the Snow Geese than I can recall seeing
in the past. This was also the first time since I've been watching Snow
Geese (eight or nine years?) that I've seen Gunnison Bend Reservoir
almost entirely frozen. The geese were mostly resting on the ice. It's
always a treat to visit the geese in windy Delta!

Good birding,
Glenda

Subject: [Birdnet] Snow Goose Festival - Snow and Ross's Geese

Just returned from the Salt Lake Birder's trip to the Delta Snow Goose
Festival. A great trip with 43 species seen at Delta, Clear Lake, and
points in between; though little open water. The expected thousands of
Snow Geese seen. A truly neat sight, especially when they all got
airborne and circled overhead for a few minutes before settling on the
ice again. But there were also lots of Ross's Geese. I have never seen
so many. I consider myself lucky to see one a year. I saw twenty plus
myself, nine within the same scope view. If the ratios we were seeing
are consistent throughout the "flock", their must be a hundred plus
Ross's mixed in with the Snowies. Also saw two Cackling Geese (short
neck and stubby bill).

Thanks,

Stephen
