In our travels through Utah, New Mexico and Colorado the past three of four
years, we have observed the most Eurasian collared doves not in cities, or
in the country, but around the edges of small towns. Thus, we typically see
the most Eurasian doves in central New Mexico not right in Socorro or at
Bosque Del Apache, but around the Owl Café area, an area of scattered
houses, sheds, fencelines, power lines and small farm animals
moderately,
but not really rural. Eurasian collared doves are now pretty common around
Vernal all year, and have been year-round residents in Jensen the past
several years. However, we live about two miles further out in the country
than scenic downtown Jensen. We have lots of Mourning doves in the summer,
and have even had four visits from White-winged doves. However, we have
only had one brief visit so far at our feeder from a Eurasian collared dove
(in 2006).
The collared doves, like starlings and house sparrows, seem to take up
year-round residence rather than migrating like the Mourning doves. You
would think that this home court advantage would result in displacing the
Mourning doves, who show up to find the Eurasians already in residence.
However, in places where we have watched the Eurasian doves for a while,
there still seem to be plenty of Mourning doves during the summers, so I am
thinking that maybe they dont directly compete for the same resources.

PS. We may getr up to SLC in the next few days
any place especially good
right now?
