This weekend (Friday-Monday) is the 2007 Great Backyard Bird Count. Last year, Utah birders submitted a record 315 checklists and reported 119 species during the count. This was just down from the record 127 species reported during 2004. Can Utah birders break both of these records this year? It would be great to see over 500 checklists and 130 species from Utah during the count!
As a former Utah County birder, I know that February can be tough, but you know the birds are out there if you can get folks out to cover the whole state. And it would only take 125 birders submitting a checklist each day during the count to hit 500 checklists. If you submit one count from your yard each day, and a couple counts from your favorite birding spot, you're there!
So head out to your favorite winter birding spot, just count the birds in your yard (or better yet, do both!), and submit your bird sightings from each location each day to www.birdsource.org/gbbc.
And have fun!
