Yesterday was Northern Harrier Day for me. It seems they were everywhere.
I drove through College Ward, Young Ward and Mendon and saw one in each
community. When I had called it a day and thought my birding was done, I
another one caught my eye as I was driving down the Valley Hwy. He was
perched on a fence post just east of the Cutler Marshes boat launch. I
parked across the road from him and watched him for about 1/2 hr, then drove
on. He didn't mind the stream of traffic going by. I was a little worried
he might not like me parked as close as I was, but he never moved, so I got
a very nice, long look at him. Then, today, one graced our yard by flying
through it in its great circle through the fields around us. It must be
Christmas.
I didn't see anything unusual, (but then if there was something rare and
outside of the usual, I probably wouldn't recognize it - like the chestnut
collared longspur - which is something I'm always wondering about... what
have I missed??)

American kestrels 4
Northern Harrier 4
Lesser scaup 4
Mute Swan 1
American wigeon 16
Gadwall 25
juncos 6
american goldfinch 2
American coot 8
Northern Shoveler 8
Malards 20
Ring-necked pheasants 9

And of course, millions of house sparrows and euro starlings. ugh.

Merry Christmas to all...
