I arrived at River Lane at 10 a.m., a bit late but still with the hope
of finding warblers. Practically the first bird I saw getting out of my
truck was a Townsend's warbler, but few warblers were seen after that.
Or at least, few that held still long enough or came sufficiently out of
the foliage to identify. However, despite the time of day and the
temperature, there were quite a few birds moving around. Notable
sightings include:
- a pair of mute swans in the reeds at the east end of the beach
- there were about a dozen common nighthawks in the trees and on the
ground in the sparse brush to the north of the road
- both a downy and a hairy woodpeckers were seen, as was a northern
flicker
- a willow flycatcher was observed, my first at river Lane
- plumbeous and warbling vireos were observed; several of the plumbeous
vireos were quite vocal; and a pair of what were almost certainly
Cassin's vireos were also seen
In case Tim is interested and reads this note: no neotropical cormorants
were observed.
