I birded the North Arm Natural Area of Pineview Reservoir this morning in
Ogden Valley, Weber County. The most numerous species were Western Tanagers
and Gray Catbirds (lots of both). Highlights included watching a Gray
Catbird take a bath in one of the shrinking pools in the riverbed of the
North Fork of the Ogden River, watching Warbling Vireos and Swainson's
Thrushes pluck Deadly Nightshade berries over a pool in the shade of a cut
bank, having Common Yellowthroats and a Yellow-breasted Chat pop out of
willow brush in response to pishing, and watching a Green-tailed Towhee eat
a Cabbage Butterfly. The place was a lot birdier than I thought it would be
because I had desperately bad birding at Fort Buenaventura in Ogden
yesterday. The list of birds I saw or heard included:
Canada Geese
American White Pelican
Turkey Vulture
Red-tailed Hawks
American Kestrel
Mourning Doves
Hummingbird sp.
Belted Kingfishers
Downy Woodpeckers
Northern Flickers
Warbling Vireos
Barn Swallows
Black-capped Chickadees
Swainson's Thrushes
American Robins
Gray Catbirds
Cedar Waxwings
MacGillivray's Warblers
Common Yellowthroats
Yellow-breasted Chat
Western Tanagers
Green-tailed Towhee
Spotted Towhees
Chipping Sparrows
Fox Sparrow
Song Sparrows
Lincoln's Sparrows
Black-headed Grosbeaks
Lazuli Buntings
House Finches
Pine Siskins
American Goldfinches
The North Arm Natural Area is located at mile 3.8 of SR-158, which begins at
Pineview Dam.
