We have a bunch of folks here at the refuge this week for a shorebird
management workshop, and one of the women is an old friend of mine from
Minnesota...well, she's not THAT old...and she came with a wish list of
birds. I decided a trip to Promontory was the ticket for a good share of
them, but what I found out was that the birds I THOUGHT would be there were
mostly not. We caught a few birds in migration, which was fun. Deanne got
6 lifers, which I thought was pretty darn good for August. It was pretty
quiet out there, overall, but some of the birds we saw were:
Burrowing owl
Western wood-pewee
Dusky flycatcher
Say's phoebe
Western kingbird
Townsend's warbler
Western tanager
Lazuli bunting
Lark sparrow
LOTS of mourning doves
Lots of turkey vultures
35 common nighthawks in a group - heading NORTH
NO chukar, short-eared owl, MAGPIE!!!, rock or canyon wren, Brewer's
sparrow or sage thrasher - which surprised me.
Was a fun evening, and after a little rain shower there was a huge rainbow
over the entire valley - gorgeous!
