As I was walking out to my car at 7:10 this morning, a group of 13 great-tailed grackles flew over my head and landed on the north edge of the roof of the wildlife education center. There were adult males, adult females and at least 3-4 juveniles.
On a more exciting note, when I was returning from the refuge, I noticed a very grayish-looking sparrow on the roadside, so stopped to investigate. It turned out to be an adult sage sparrow - I was pretty surprised by this! It gave me just enough time to get a good look at it, before flying off to the north side of the road into the shrubs.
The sparrow was just 2 miles west of the wildlife education center along Forest Street, at what we call Reeder bend - major left curve in the road. This is also where you see the Bird Refuge 10 miles sign.
