I wonder if the fire up Farmington Canyon has sent some of the resident birds up there to the valley. I live in Woods Cross and get a pretty good variety of birds especially during migration but the last week I have species I have never or rarely seen in my yard.
Western Tanagers: I have seen on only one before, once earlier this spring and she just flew through and only spent a few minutes. Last weekend I saw a pair, male and female most of the day flying around between my trees and the trees in my neighbor's yard. Last night I observed at least 10 birds, a couple of males and the rest were females and juveniles.
Olive-sided Flycatcher: First ever, standing post in the locust tree in my neighbors back yard. Very fun to watch it take off chase down a bug then right back to it's perch.
Hermit Thrush: First ever, hanging out in my wild rose and grape vines.
Western Wood Peewee: My old friend, this guy has shown up this time every year for the last three years and he is now back as of last night standing post in a dead maple tree in my back yard. I have left this dead tree up because it attracts so many birds.
MacGillivray's Warblers: Like the Western Wood Peewee they have been visiting in the spring and again late summer for the last 3 years.
House Wrens have been hanging out in my shrubs but didn't see any last night.
Others that frequent my yard and were seen last night:
House finch
Black-headed Grosbeak
Scrub Jays
American and Lesser Goldfinch
Barn Swallows
Robins
Starlings
House Sparrows
Mourning Doves
What a nice break from work and other projects that occupy most of my time.
Happy Birding
Steve
PS I hope to see many of you tomorrow evening at Farmington Bay
