Chris, et all,
I can say for certain that the bird observed yesterday was a Reddish Egret. I
was able to watch it do its "feeding dance" for about 10 minutes. Little Blue
Heron DO NOT do this dance. Aside from the dance the bird was doing that I
believe is a diagnostic action, Jack's photos show dark, if not black legs,
which would eliminate LBHE. From his pictures the bird looks to have a blue
body and a "reddish" or maroon colored head an neck. The bird appeared to be
in non-breeding plumage, albeit it was several hundred yards away. The base of
the bill appeared pale, but in the bad light I couldn't make out the pink
either.
Cheers,
Tim
