Jack and others,
So long as you saw your bird foraging for an extended period of time (10 min
should be sufficient), the behavior of your bird could possibly be
conclusive when it comes to the identity of it. Reddish Egrets (including
the Fish Springs bird) actively forage and hunt fish by running through the
water. Periodically, they lift their wings as they run or while they're
standing in a spot. It sort of looks like they're dancing in the water, and
it's quite fun to watch. It's not say that Reddish Egrets don't stand in a
single locale to hunt for a little bit, but for any extended period of time
(I purposely stuck around so I could watch it), you will likely see a
Reddish Egret move around the water actively. In contrast, Little Blue
Herons are much more Snowy Egret like in their behavior in that they tend to
hunt from one spot.
Hopefully this is helpful.
