Bob Bradley and I made a trip to Fish Springs NWR this morning and were fortunate to see the PAINTED BUNTING (in the picnic area-showed up around noon), a female SCARLET TANAGER (in the top of the canopy in the trees between the Headquarters building and residential area-got permission to walk through the residential area), the RED EGRET (in the Avocet pond/unit, visible from the road between the Mallard Pond/unit and Avocet Pond/unit), a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD (at the hummingbird feeder in the residential area), but no RED SHOULDERED HAWK (although we did see PRAIRIE FALCON near the gravel road going to Fish Springs). We spoke with a NWR employee who reported a huge influx of birders to Fish Springs to see a "weird-assed bird". He went on suggest that the bird was a Cackling Bunting, or something similar. Unable to locate said bird in my Sibleys. :-)

Happy to report no flat tires, although that gravel road does violate the time space continuum and goes on forever.
Thanks.
Buck
