Migration Status: In Northern Utah many shorebirds are now moving through the
Great Salt Lake Region. As many as 20 species are currently being seen,
including Hudsonian Godwit, American Golden-Plover, Dunlin, Solitary Sandpiper,
Semipalmated, Least, and Western Sandpiper, Sanderling, Willet, etc. Songbird
are also on the move in smaller numbers. Several mini fallouts have been
reported at Garr Ranch, and birds such as Lincoln's Sparrow, Green-tailed
Towhee, Yellow-rumped and Orange-crowned Warbler, Lazuli Bunting, Broad-tailed
Hummingbird and Ruby-crowned Kinglet are being reported. Shorebird migration
should peak in the next 10 days, while songbird migration will gradually
increase over the next 2 weeks.
Davis County:
-- A single HUDSONIAN GODWIT was discovered by Joel and Kathy Beyer at
Farmington Bay WMA on April 22nd. The brid was initially seen to the south of
the first pond (this is where the first right turn is). Tim Avery was able to
photograph the bird as it flew by to the west of Egg Island about an hour after
the initial finding.
-- 9 Dunlin were reported by Tim Avery to the north of MM 6 at AIC on April
22nd. There was one flock of 8 birds and a singelton with a flock of mixed
Western and Least Sandpiper and Sanderling.
-- Semipalmated Sandpiper were reported by Tim Avery on April 21st and 22nd
along AIC. A single bird was observed on Saturday while another was seen in a
photograph taken on Sunday near MM6.
-- 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER were seen and photographed by Tim Avery
along the AIC between MM 5 & 6 on the north side of the causeway on
April 16th. The birds were loosely associating with nearby Black-bellied Plovers
which numbered around 400.
San Juan County:
-- A possible YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was reported by Brian Gatlin in
Canyonlands National Park on April 15th. The bird was said to be a
female, and seen along Salt Creek, right at the intersection with the trail to
Angel Arch in the Needles District of Canyonlands.
Utah County:
-- A Solitary Sandpiper was reported by Lu Giddings and Dennis Shirley in the
Swede's Lane area on April 21st.
Washington County:
-- A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was reported by Larry Tripp. The bird was
seen visiting a drip behind the restrooms at Lytle Ranch on April 20th and was
seen again on the 21st by Larry Tripp and Merrill Webb.
-- A Broad-winged Hawk was reported by Larry Tripp in the trees along
the creek to the west of the entrance gate at Lytle Ranch on April 20th and
again on April 21st.
-- A Black-and-white Warbler was reported by Merrill Webb at Lytle Ranch on
April 21st, foraging creeper-like on the trunk of a large cottonwood near where
the Golden-crowned Sparrow was seen.
-- A Least Flycatcher was reported by Merrill Webb at Lytle Ranch on April 21st
in the cottonwood forest upstream from the irrigation pond.
