After a successful UOS trip to San Juan County last week, the UOS is sponsoring one more set of field trips for the year. These trips will be to Daggett County, one of the least-birded counties in the state (including a visit to the Brown's Park NWR that is actually just across the border into Colorado, in case any of you are keeping a Colorado list). Also included is Ouray NWR, Pelican Lake and the Stewart Lake WMA near Jensen. Because of timing, we decided to offer 2 identical trips so that if you can't make one of them, possibly you can catch the other. The dates are Thursday - Saturday, May 10 - 12. You'll be back for Mother's Day on the 13th. The following trip will be on Thursday - Saturday, May 31 - June 2.
As a summary, we will leave Thursday evening and drive to Tabiona to spend the night at Pat Jividen's cabin. That will give us at least 2 hours' head start for the drive into the Uintas. We will leave Friday a.m. kinda early then spend the day in the very NE corner of the county and state, visiting the Brown's Park State WMA in Utah, then the Brown's Park Federal NWR in Colorado. We'll be checking out some likely spots between Dutch John and the refuges, then back to the Sheep Creek loop. Night will probably catch us there, where we plan to do some owling. Then, those who wish to camp can do so at a place like the Green's Lake campground, or, if not, then we'll go to a motel in Vernal.
On Saturday, we will check out the Stewart Lake WMA area near Jensen, then drive to Ouray NWR. We plan to arrive about 10 a.m. For those birders who cannot get away till Saturday, they will come directly to Ouray NWR and spend as much time as desired there. Diane Penttila will be in touch with me to tell us where the most likely places to look for American Bitterns are to be found that weekend. That is our only target bird, plus just birding in an area that most of us almost never get to. Upon leaving the refuge, we'll stop at Pelican Lake, then possibly some other lakes and ponds along the highway coming back to the Wasatch Front or Back.
In order to not clog up the e-mails for those who are not interested -- as we did with the recent San Juan trip, for those who are interested in going on either of both of these Uinta trips, please contact Steve Carr directly by e-mail to let me know which time you are planning and whether you'll be camping or going to a motel Friday night. I will have motel rates and information for you then; and we can better arrange car-pooling, etc., rather than just wondering who will be at various pick-up points.
