As a note about birds on the move, but no particular rarities -
shorebirds are
being seen and reported across Utah at this point, including:
Black-bellied Plover,
Marbled Godwit, Willet, Long-billed Curlew, Semipalmated Sandpiper and more.

Cache County:

-- On Saturday April 14th at around 11:15 pm an Owl was heard at Beaver
Mountain Ski Resort giving an odd call. Colby Neuman
and Tim Avery DID NOT identify the bird, but have been given information
that the call heard may have been a female Boreal Owl. The area
has produced Boreal Owl's in the past, but has been several years since
reports form this area have been made. Beaver Mountain can be reached by
taking
highway 89/91 West out of Logan and up Logan Canyon. The resort is near
the summit and can be reached by turning north onto Highway 243 and
following the road about a mile to the
parking area. The bird was heard on the slope to the west of the lodge.
THIS IS NOT A CONFIRMED SIGHTING/IDENTIFICATION, but is a note to those
who may be interested
in trying for this species in northern Utah.

Davis County:

-- A EURASIAN WIGEON was photographed by Tim Avery at Farmington Bay WMA
on the afternoon of April 9th. The bird was an adult male
and seen in the large pond just to the north of Egg Island.

Juab County:

-- 2 Greater White-fronted Goose were reported by Lu Gidding at Fish
Springs NWR on the northeast end of Harrison pool on April 14th.

Salt Lake County:

-- A Horned Grebe was swimming at Little Dell Reservoir in Salt Lake
County in
the small inlet on the west side adjacent to mm 2 of SR-65 on April 125h
and reported by Kris Purdy.

San Juan County:

-- 2 of the 3 Scaled Quail were reportedly seen again April 14th and
reported
by Steve Carr. The birds were in the same area of Montezuma Creek Canyon as
previously reported.

-- A GLOSSY IBIS was reported by Dave Slager and Tim Avery on April 8th
at the Hite Crossing on the Colorado River.
The bird was with a flock of at least 13 White-faced Ibis, and possibly
one other Glossy.

-- Acorn Woodpecker's were seen again on the weekend of April 13-14th at
Devil's Canyon
by Steve Carr and members of the Salt Lake Birders.

Upcoming Birding Events:

April 17th (Tue): Great Salt Lake Audubon Monthly Meeting - GSLA
Programs are held at the Sugarhouse Garden Center, NE corner of
Sugarhouse Park (enter from 2100 South, just west of Highland High).
Doors open at 6:45pm. Program runs from 7:00 to 8:30pm. We’ll have
refreshments, it’s FREE and everyone is invited to join us. Call
521-2939 for more information.

April 25th (Wed): Wasatch Audubon Society Meeting - Paul Higgins is an
outstanding wildlife photographer who specializes in birds. He has
shared some of his images and experiences with us in the past and will
once again bring Joys of Bird Photography to our April meeting. Most of
the unusual birds observed in Northern Utah in the past year were
photographed by Paul, so if you missed seeing them, here’s a chance to
see what you missed! At the Ogden Nature Center (966 W 12th).

April 18th (Wed): Wasatch Audubon Society Bird Walk - Box Elder
Campground & Mantua: Meet at 7:45 at McDonald’s (1838 W 2700N, Farr West
– east of I-15 exit #349) for breakfast or meet there at 8:15 for
carpooling. We’ll bird the campground and check out the reservoir.

April 19th - 22nd (Thu-Sun): Bridgerland Audubon Field Trip - We will be
scouring the Mojave and Colorado Plateau during this 4-day trip for all
things that crawl, hop, fly, and just look pretty. Desert bloom,
migratory birds, and warm, sunny days (here's hoping!) will bring on an
onslaught of reptiles and amphibians, of whom we will capture on
occasion for intimacy! Camp with us April 19-22 (Thursday -Sunday) in
primitive settings (your own water, food, & gear), or stay in nearby St.
George or Springdale (we finish in Zion National Park). Meet at the
Caffé Ibis parking lot by 3 p.m. for carpooling. For more information
and to reserve a spot, call Jack Greene at 563-6816 or email:
jackisgreene at yahoo.com.

April 21st (Sat): Bear River NWR Wing Fling II - Our wildlife education
center's one year anniversary open house will include speakers and
guided birding trips between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. A family "Wetland
Ed-venture" activity will run from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. For more detailed
information, watch your newspapers or check with us as the date draws
near! Cost: Free!

April 21st (Sat): Great Salt Lake Audubon Field Trip - A TOUR of TOOELE
- Leader: Nathan Darnall. Join us for a half day of birding as we
explore Rush Lake, Settlement Canyon and few other surprises. Meet at 7
a.m. in the South-East corner of Shopko parking lot in Sugarhouse, or
7:35am at Saltair. Call Nathan (755-4480) if you plan to go.

April 21st (Sat): Wasatch Audubon Society Bird Walk -East Canyon Grouse
Lek: Meet at 5:30am at the DWR building in South Ogden. From the lek
we'll go on to East Canyon and then stop at the Morgan Spring Chicken
Inn for breakfast.

April 21st (Sat): Bridgerland Audubon Field Trip - Breakfast,
Sharp-tailed Grouse and General Birding. The wonderful land stewards and
ranching family, the Selmans, have again invited us to their property in
the foothills at the extreme south end of Cache Valley to view
sharp-tailed grouse doing their mating ritual dance on their traditional
leks. Some greater sage grouse have also been found recently near the
same place. Because we need to be in place by dawn, we will meet at 5
a.m. Saturday at the parking lot between Caffé Ibis and the Logan Fire
Station and carpool to the location where the grouse are. Dress warmly,
because there is usually a cold wind blowing in the early morning. Bring
binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Also bring your
appetite, because the Selmans cook us a wonderful ranch-style breakfast
at the end of the viewing. For more information, call Bret Selman at
257-5260, or Buck Russell at (435) 512-9641.

April 25th (Wed): Great Salt Lake Audubon Field Trip - FARMINGTON BAY
WMA and NEARBY AREA - Leaders: Bob Huntington and Deedee O’Brien. Join
us for our monthly half-day visit to Farmington Bay. Meet inside the
McDonald's just north of the Centerville exit #319 from I-15 at 7:30 am
for breakfast and camaraderie or 8am to head out. Bring your own water
and snacks. Call Deedee at (272-8060) if you plan to attend.

April 25th (Wed): Wasatch Audubon Society Bird Walk - Ogden Bay, South:
Meet at 7:45 at McDonald’s (Riverdale Road & 900 W) for breakfast or
meet there at 8:15 to carpool.

April 27th - 28th (Fri-Sat): Utah County Birders Field Trip - Torrey and
Capitol Reef National Park - Friday: overnight in Torrey; Best Western
Capitol Reef Resort Torrey* - UCB group rate $65, call Beth or Chris to
reserve your room at 435.425.3761 and remember to mention you're with
the UCB group. More details TBA.
