Box Elder County:
-- 5 Horned Grebes were seen by Wasatch Audubon and reported by Kris Purdy on
the sewage pond north of Willard Bay State Park on April 4th.
Cache County
-- A VARIED THRUSH was reported by Sue Drown in Smithfield near Mack Park on
April 1st. Apparently this thrush was seen earlier in the year but hasn't been
reported in quite some time.
-- A Krider's (Red-tailed) Hawk has been seen for several days during the past
week and reported by Keith Archibald on the Benson Road, which is 3200 W. off
Highway 30, west of Logan.
Davis County:
-- 3 Long-tailed Duck were reported by the Great Salt Lake Audubon field
Trip at AIC on April 1st. The birds were hanging out where the causeway
curves, on the north
side about 150 yards from the shore. There was 1 male bird and 2
females. This represents the 4th latest spring record for this species
in Utah.
Grand County:
-- A Black Phoebe was reported by Dave Slager on the Dolores River about a mile
upstream from the confluence with the Colorado River in Grand Co on Sunday
afternoon, April 1st.
Utah County:
-- An Olive-sided Flycatcher was heard repeatedly at Lincoln Beach along Utah
Lake by the Utah County Birders on April 7th, reported by Lu Giddings. This
represents an early appearance by this species and the first of year report.
Wasatch County:
-- 26 Common Loons were reported by Colby Neuman and Tim Avery on
Jordanelle Reservoir on April 1st. This is the first large movement of
loons this spring.
Washington County:
-- A PAINTED REDSTART was seen and heard singing at the Temple of Sinawava in
Zion National Park by Larry Tripp. The bird stayed around the north end of the
parking area and the slope behind the restrooms.
-- The LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH photographed on March 20th by Bob Lawson in
his backyard in Dammeron Valley was relocated on March 30th by Tim Avery
in the afternoon. The bird was then seen again
during the morning of March 31st and seen by Bob Lawson, Jack Binch and
Larry Tripp. Attempts to locate the bird in the afternoon were unsuccessful.

join us for breakfast in Morgan, and continue birding in the Henefer
area. Meet in SE corner of ShopKo parking lot in Sugarhouse (behind Red
Lobster) near 1300 East exit from I-80 by 5:15am to receive handouts

arranged with the DWR people in Monticello for a special viewing of the
Gunnison Sage-Grouse leks. It will be necessary for all present on Saturday
morning at the leks to attend the DWR meeting Friday evening. More details
in the April issue of Bird Tracks, or call Pat - 944-5001. Then, as a
hopeful bonus, after sunrise on Saturday when we leave the leks, we will run
down to Montezuma Creek Canyon to try to find the Scaled Quail that we saw
last week. They are probably permanent residents and so should still be
around.
