[Birdtalk] The Saw-whets are A-singin'

If it's April, it's saw-whet singing month. I heard four Northern Saw-whet Owls in mixed aspen-fir at elevations between 6000 and 6500 feet in Weber County tonight and one bird came in in response to a playback. The others ignored me or I just listened to them without calling them.

I was also very surprised to hear what I believe could only be a young Great Horned Owl giving its begging call at dusk or just after. The timing of the call was right according to sunset; I just thought GHOs were still far too young to be begging loudly yet. In addition, instead of the usualy "Yiiiiiiiip!", the call sounded more like "Haaaaaaar!"--sort of like a pirate owl. The best I could do was young GHO.

Now I'm going to have to poke around on a wooded slope to see if I can find the nest tree. It's a stone that must be turned.
