Last year about this time, we got Kris Purdy's report of Sapsuckers drumming near Nordic Valley. Yesterday, I may have heard the same thing while riding the Peak 5 lift at The Canyons. Loud, distinct, repetitive bursts that increased in speed right near the end of the burst. Never did see the bird, but he had apparently picked the best resonating tree in the forest. Being within 100' feet of the chairlift, the sound echoed nicely through the area.
Very cool! And quite a deep sounding and reasonably loud burst....could only be attained from a fairly hard hit from a pretty good sized bird. Could it have been a Northern Flicker in a dense pine forest? I'm going with Sapsucker just for the fun of it. Odd how alive the entire forest seemed. It appeared most of the Summer inhabitants had returned. I also heard a Thrush-like song in the distance. Robin-like, but different.
