Subject: [Birdtalk] Birding in Piute County
On Saturday morning Merrill Webb and I went south to bird Piute County. On
the way south, along I-15, we saw numerous Swainson’s Hawks along the way.
The big surprise was a Broad-winged Hawk flying east to west right over the
front of the truck, between Payson and Santaquin. Merrill had just passed
another vehicle, so it was not possible to stop right away, but we compared
it to the pictures in Kaufman’s field guide (more on this later), and both
agreed that is what it was.
Merrill saw 77 species in Piute County and I saw 73. It was a great day of
birding, but we generally had to pick-up the birds one or two at a time,
except at Otter Creek. Here is what we saw by county, not in taxonomic
order, but (almost) in the order seen. When you are “flying” down the
interstate about all you can see are raptors and a raven. After we left
I-15 on Hwy 50 into Scipio we stopped at the first stop sign in the town and
noticed a very large tree with about 42 roosting Turkey Vultures. At Piute
Reservoir there were numerous American White Pelicans. It was interesting
to see them in a “close order” line, herding fish into the shallow water,
then spearing out with their beaks to catch the fish.
