I drove up Payson canyon early this afternoon. The road was dry and in
great shape to the Maple Lake road, but beyond that it was very icy in
spots. By the time I reached Payson Lakes I had had enough adventure for
one day, even though the road was undoubtedly passable beyond the lakes
and further up the canyon. Not many birds were seen or heard either on
the trip up or down canyon. The only thing of any real interest is that
Townsend's solitaires have begun to move down to lower elevations. They
were observed from just below the lakes (about 7800' elevation) to the
vicinity of the scout camp at around 5500'.
