Hi all,
Tim Avery and I went birding at Mountain Dell, Little Dell and East Canyon
Reservoirs as well as Willard Bay SP and the Antelope Island Causeway.
Highlights included the SURF SCOTER, HORNED GREBES as reported by
Tim, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, multiple HOODED MERGANSERS and other winter
arrivals...
*Mountain Dell Reservoir*
Ring-necked Ducks ~ 200
American Wigeon - 4
Eared Grebe - 1
*Little Dell Reservoir*
Gadwall - 1
Canada Goose - 4
*East Canyon Reservoir*
Common Loon - 37 - a couple still molting out of alternate plumage
Pied-billed Grebe - 3
Eared Grebe - 25
Western Grebe - 17
Gadwall - 2
Common Goldeneye - 6 - 2 groups of 3
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE - 4 - near the inlet
Common Merganser - 13 - several small groups along the shoreline
HOODED MERGANSER - 2 - pair in the inlet that the road crosses over -
opposite side of the highway from the main reservoir
BALD EAGLE - 2 adults
*Pond to the north of Willard Bay SP entrance*
Western Grebe - 2
HOODED MERGANSER - 1 female
*Willard Bay SP Campground and view of lake*
Common Goldeneye - 1 - female in pond in the campground
Bonaparte's Gulls - 45 - flying at various distances out in the reservoir
Hermit Thrush - 1 - heard 'cluck' call only
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 4
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 12 - including 1 'Myrtle' that gave its distinct
chip note
Spotted Towhee - 2
White-crowned Sparrow - 25+
*Willard Bay South Dike*
Black-crowned Night-Heron - 1 - feeding in the canal
Greater Yellowlegs - 6 - playas to south of dike
Least Sandpiper - 20 - 2 flocks
Killdeer - 113 - a flock of ~ 70 by entrance to Harold Crane
FRANKLIN'S GULL - 1 - mixed in flock of gulls on playas to the south
Bonaparte's Gull ~ 300 - 1 huge flock by entrance to Harold Crane - couldn't
pick out a Little or B-H Gull
Forster's Tern - 2 - both in basic plumage
Prairie Falcon - 1 - spooked shorebird/gull flock
*Antelope Island Causeway*
HORNED GREBE - 2 - basic plumage - south side of causeway across from marina
Tundra Swan - 2 - mile+ off to the north
Northern Shoveler - 25,000+
Ruddy Duck - 39 - 2 flocks
SURF SCOTER - 1 female - south side of causeway across from marina
American Coot - 11
Long-billed Curlew - 1 - hatch year bird lingering on south side of causeway
American Avocet ~ 150
Prairie Falcon - 1
