My sisters and I had a beautiful day birding in this area. We first stopped at the JEFFERSON HUNT CAMPGROUND: Black-billed Magpies, Am. Crows, Downy Woodpeckers, Black-capped Chickadees, Audubon's Warblers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Northern Flickers, and one of several other sightings that thrilled us. One was the BARN OWL. It moved around the trees quickly as we would approach it, so be ready to follow it through the trees.
WINTERS GROVE NATURE TRAIL: Red-napped Sapsuckers, Belted Kingfishers, GREAT HORNED OWL, and another surprise, the BALD EAGLE.
ANDERSON COVE CAMPGROUND: Swimming on the reservoir, was a raft of Common Mergansers at least(50) or so. Also Ring-billed Gulls, & a Raven.
HWY. TO EDEN: Red-tailed Hawks, one flew down right to the side of our car, and caught it's prey, and then flew up to a pole to finish it off. American Kestrel, White Crowned Sparrows.
LIBERTY: (right where Kris Purdy gave directions to in her post) were the Lewis's Woodpeckers. Great sightings of them and perfect directions from Kris to the sight. They were just beautiful, and gave us quite a show.
If you can make it up to this area it was a "little gold mine", and well worth our time! We birded from about 2:00pm until 4:30pm. Wear warm clothing. Even with the Sun out it was chilly.
