Yesterday afternoon I saw a single black-backed lesser goldfinch at my
thistle feeder. I have had green-backed lesser goldfinches for the past week
and a half, but this is the first black-backed that I have seen at my home.
Checking the field guides it says that black-backed birds are found in the
more eastern range of lesser goldfinches. Is Utah considered to be in this
eastern range? Anyone else out there see black-backed lessers on a regular
basis?
It is a very beautiful bird. The black back runs through the neck and
enclosing the cap, down to the bill, brilliant yellow breast and belly.
