Greetings,
About 7-8 years ago while doing the Zion Christmas
Bird Count I was in the town of Rockville, which is
within the Zion count circle. There is a house on the
north side of town where I have consistently been able
to find a Rufous-crowned Sparrow during the count
because the owners have a bunch of feeders they
maintain during the winter. While asking permission
to look at the feeders in their back yard they
mentioned that they had a hummingbird coming to their
hummingbird feeder--that it had been there for at
least a month. This was during the week after
Christmas and the temperatures were below freezing
almost every night. So we went around front and
looked up into a large conifer tree that was next to
their house. The owners had rigged up a light bulb
with a reflector on top that deflected the heat down
over the hummingbird feeder. This not only kept the
fluid inside the feeder from freezing, but also
provided warmth for the bird where it perched next to
it during the night. We didn't have to wait long to
see the bird. It was a male Anna's--a first for the
Zion CBC. We also saw the Rufous-crowned.
