We just saw mom and dad Quail escorting 7 little itty-bitty "walnut"
sized chicks to the area of our bird feeder here in the East Millcreek
area. These are the first Quail chicks we have seen this Spring. They
are very small, presuming they hatched within past few hours to one
day. (California Quail, of course.)
Also, we have a pair of Black-capped Chickadees nesting in a feeder that
we have not been filing with seed. It is a section of Birch tree that
has a cap in the bottom, cover on top, and a few holes in the side for
birds to get seed out of. This nest has been active for a few weeks
now, and while I can't see in side it, I do think there are chicks in it
from the sounds I hear when mom or dad chickadee are at the nest.
We've had lots of hummers around now for the past couple of weeks. They
hang-out high up in the old dead Blue Spruce on our property. (My dead
tree "for the birds." People ask why I keep a dead tree, and I say,
well it's for the birds, as they use the high perch often during the
day, especially early and late in the day. It is a good vantage point
both to view them and allows for a clear path for them to the
feeder...) Have had several good looks at them on the hummer-feeder out
the kitchen window, I think these are mostly Black-chinned Hummingbirds,
have not seen any rosy or lighter chin coloring of the Calliope, or the
more orange of the Allen's or Rufous, or the red of the Anna's. Has
anyone else on UtahBirdTalk seen any of these other varieties in the
past few days?
Matthew Wallace.
