Birders,
Yesterday afternoon I went to Juab County with my wife
to see what I could find on the first day of May.
Mona Reservoir continues to be very productive. We
found all four grebes, two Marbled Godwits, Five
Caspian Terns, one Forster's Tern, a small flock of
Dowitchers, two Wilson's Phalaropes, quite a few
Willets and a Great Egret. There were still quite a
few species of ducks, especially Cinnamon Teal and
Gadwall. Then, we drove down to Chicken Creek
Reservoir. Lots of coots still, and a smattering of
ducks, but not much in the way of new shorebirds
except 15 Wilson's Phalaropes. Saw a Long-billed
Curlew in the wetlands to the north of the reservoir.
Had a Eurasian Collared Dove and a Lesser Goldfinch in
Levan. Then we drove up Salt Creek Canyon east of
Nephi and took the turn-of to Bear Canyon which is now
open (as of Monday). Not a lot of action up there
except Golden-crowned Kinglets, a couple of Wild
Turkeys, and some Red-breasted Nuthatches. Saw four
Lewis' Woodpeckers near the junction of the Nebo Loop
road. Finished with 79 species; a beautiful afternoon
for birding.
