When's the last time you saw five species of woodpecker in a few hours? If you attended GSLA's birdwalk last week, you saw one better than that. But the five-woodpecker day happened to Glenn Barlow and moi today on a trip to La Plata in southern Cache County and Monte Cristo in southern Rich County. There were some other interesting birds as well. Here's our list:
Mallard
Wild Turkey
Turkey Vulture
Northern Goshawk
Swainson's Hawk
Red-tailed Hawk
American Kestrel
Killdeer
Wilson's Snipe
Mourning Dove
Broad-tailed Hummingbird
Lewis's Woodpecker
Williamson's Sapsucker
Red-naped Sapsucker
Hairy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
Olive-sided Flycatcher
Western Wood-pewee
Dusky Flycatcher
Warbling Vireo
Clark's Nutcracker
Black-billed Magpie
American Crow
Purple Martin
Tree Swallow
Barn Swallow
Rock Wren
House Wren
Mountain Bluebird
American Robin
Yellow-rumped Warbler
MacGillivray's Warbler
Western Tanager
Green-tailed Towhee
Chipping Sparrow
Brewer's Sparrow
Vesper Sparrow
Lark Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
Dark-eyed Junco
Black-headed Grosbeak
Lazuli Bunting
Western Meadowlark
Brewer's Blackbird
Cassin's Finch
Pine Siskin
American Goldfinch
The Lewis's Woodpecker was most interesting. It was a juvenile that flew over the windshield at mile 27.3 of SR-39 about 6 miles east of Huntsville. We pulled over for a better look and watched the bird in swooping flight do a little flycatching. A juvenile Lewis's in June is evidence of a breeding location in my book.
