Subject: Request for birding info or assistance

Hello all, I will be arriving in the SLC area on the
evening of the 29th of June to bird for about a
week(from the 30th to the 8th of July) and will be
staying at Snowbird from the 30th on. ...
I have been perusing this
listserv off and on for just over a year and would
like to make an appeal for any local assistance and/or
insight before arriving later this coming week. I
already have a copy of McIvors Birding Utah and a
copy of the GSL Birding Trail map but from many years
of birding know that there is no substitute for up to
date insight from local experts in the area.
The proposed trip itineraries go as far north as Bear
River Refuge, as far east as Mirror Lake, as far south
as Provo, and as far west as the Grantsville-South
Willow Canyon area. I have some flexibility each day
for stops anywhere within this loosely defined
quadrangle to find possible target birds. Some of the
species that are on the wishlist include: Snowy
Plover, Clarks Grebe, Black Rosy Finch, Lazuli
Bunting, Sage and Brewers Sparrow, Pinyon Jay,
Cassins Finch, Gray Vireo, Graces, Virginias, and
Black-thr.Gray Warblers, Juniper Titmouse, Gray
Flycatcher, Three-toed and Lewiss Woodpecker, Black
Swift, Barn Owl, Flammulated Owl, Cassins Kingbird,
and/or Ferruginous Hawk (in no particular order). If
anyone has any insight or information on a reliable
location to find these or any other Utah specialties
please let me know. Even better, if anyone has time to
go out birding on the 30th or 1st for part or most of
those days, please let me know as well.
I will have my laptop with me for e-mail access
during this period and will have my own vehicle
(rental of course) also to get around the region.
Thanks already to Kristin Purdy for some excellent
advice and insight and best wishes to Mark Stackhouse
for a speedy recovery. My e-mail address is breteg AT
yahoo.ca for direct communication, keep up the good
work there in making known what a great state Utah is
for both birds and birding. All the best, Brete
Griffin (currently living in Toronto, Canada but
forever a West by God Virginian). Go Mountaineers!
