[Birdtalk] An ID Challenge

Anyone interested in an ID challenge?

I received a request to identify a bird from a person who calls himself a non-birder. Rather than come right out and admit I'm an idiot and I have no idea what bird could fit this description, I thought I'd offer it up to the greater Utah birding community for help. Here it is:

"I saw the bird on the entrance to the trail along the Weber River (Riverdale). It had two distinctive red splotches on each wing. Bright red and circular with irregular edges, almost as if someone had dipped a circular sponge in red paint and daubed it on the wings, with the excess paint leaving a somewhat irregular edge. It was about the size of a small robin, and it flitted from tree to tree. The larger circle was closer to the body, and the smaller circle was closer to the wing tip. I am familiar with red wing blackbirds, and this did not resemble any I have seen."

I've asked for more information, like what was the basic color of the bird--a rather important clue. Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

Kris
