Folks,
I was able to visit Mark in the University Hospital yesterday evening. He
told me that he came out of the medically-induced coma on Saturday, when
they moved him out of the ICU to a regular room (626, Bed #1: 6th South). I
have to say that he looked pretty rough, but it seemed his spirits were
positive. When I asked him if he remembered the accident, he told me that
he did not remember anything, and when he gained consciousness on Saturday
did not know where he was, or why he was there. I imagine that you cannot
be in an automobile accident where the vehicle turns over multiple time,
without suffering some kind of bruising etc. Which seemed evident. He was
also wearing a neck brace and said that the 7th vertebrae in his neck was
also cracked. As you know, Mark is a tough person, so will undoubtedly come
out of this is good condition. I know that is our hopes and prayers for
him.
I asked him if anyone witnessed the accident and he told me that an employee
of Magcorp. and a person from EPA were driving behind him and saw the
accident. He also told me he was wearing his seatbelt. However, the injury
to his left arm was significant and he said that at one point they
considered amputation. However, after 5 hours of surgery the MDs think they
were able to repair his arm.
At this time he does not know how long he will be in the hospital, although
he said it might be a couple of more days. I personally think it will be a
little longer than that.
That is all I have for now.
Best wishes to all.

All Utah Birders,
I called the Westwings Office today and was informed by Brad, the office
person, that Mark was in a very serious vehicle accident yesterday.
Apparently this happened while he was involved in one of his consulting
activities/surveys at a magnesium plant. From what I was told, his vehicle
rolled several times and his left arm was severely injured. He was taken to
the University Hospital where they performed surgery on his left arm. I was
also told that following surgery he was put into a medically induced state
of unconsciousness, which was supposedly done to help in the healing
process.. How long he will remain this way I do not know.
For those of us interested in his well-being, it might perhaps be a good
idea to remember him and his family in our prayers. Let’s hope he has a
speedy recovery.
