Went up early on Sunday to Bear River MBR. It's hard to resist that place
because you never know what's in store.
I spotted a SHORT-EARED OWL on a post about 1/3 of the way down the road. It
paused for photos until a truck scared it off. I almost ran over another owl
that was along side the road near some cattails--I think it was feeding.
Inside the refuge along the loop that runs west(?) from the equipment
building, there were some SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, a LEAST SANDPIPER, and a
PECTORAL SANDPIPER. Didn't that sound confident (especially after the
Flicker/Starling controversy)? I think it was a pectoral sandpiper--it was
the right size, had yellowish legs, the right bill shape and color, and
correct breast pattern, etc. I took a picture of it by itself, with a
killdeer and with a least sandpiper for comparison purposes. Here's a link
to my site if you want to differ with my guess. Click on the Pectoral
Sandpiper link under NEW at the top of the page. There's also a link to the
short-eared owl.

Lots of birds today. It was hot! (and the temperature was right up there,
too.)

P.S. Feel free to correct me about the sandpiper.
