Angie B and I went looking for the White-Winged crossbills in Albion basin on Tues night. The wild flowers were incredible and the bird life was amazing, but alas no crossbills were seen, not even red ones. We did however see three species of humming birds including the Calliope (which was on both of our dirty little secret lists :0). Other fun birds we saw included, orange crowed warbles, townsend s solitarie, lots of chipping and white-crowned sparrows, pine siskins, a mountain blue bird, and of course juncos, chickadees and robins. What would the mountains be without the chickadees!?
The next morning we decided to try for the Whimbrel at Antelope Island. We saw several Long-Billed Curlews, including one juvenile, that had a much shorter bill about the length of a whimbrel, but again we didn t see our target bird. Has anyone else seen it again in the last few days?
But the day wasn t a totally loss, we saw a Barn Owl right at the gate to the causeway, and two short-billed dowitchers, and the always fun Willets. All in all it was a great couple of days, great friends, conversation and birding.
If anyone has seen the white-wings or the whimbrel again please let us know. We still really want to see them. I think we are going to try for the white-winged crossbills again tomorrow morning.
Good luck!
Beth Cottam
